Information on No-Fee Work-at-Home Jobs

Information on No-Fee Work-at-Home JobsInformation on No-Fee Work-at-Home JobsTheres a very simple rule when it comes to looking for work at home jobs. Dont pay a fee - for anything. You shouldnt pay for job listings, you shouldnt pay to apply for jobs, and you shouldnt pay a fee to get on the payroll. Also, companies that try to tell you that you need to pay for start-up kits or computer supplies to get started, most likely arent legitimate. While there are many legitimate work from home opportunities out there, unfortunately, there are also many fraudulent companies preying on hopeful applicants and cheating them out of money. Dont Pay a Fee for Work at Home Jobs Legitimate companies dont charge to hire you. They pay all the expenses of recruiting, hiring, and training. They also dont charge you for start-up kits, lists of jobs, or anything else related to doing the work. Legitimate employers dont ask for a fee to set-up your account, or to access your personal or bank informat ion. Fees Can Indicate a Scam In fact, companies or websites charging fees for work at home job listings or information on working at home are high on the list of red flags you should watch out for when trying to stay clear of online job scams. You should never, ever provide a hiring company with your credit card number or bank account information. If its requested, that is a very likely sign that the opportunity is in fact a scam. Be wary, too, of requests for unusual personal information, which scammers can use for identity theft. Paying for Equipment The only time you may have expenses is after you have been hired some call center work at home jobs may require you to invest in home geschftszimmer equipment. These expenses should only come after youve gotten the position, and not during the hiring process. During the hiring process, you should be told of the necessity of having access to the required equipment, and may even be offered assistance with your set-up costs. Bef ore you invest in an office or equipment, carefully check out what youll need to spend, and decide if the investment is worth it. Mystery Shopping Done with Check One common scam is for mystery shoppers, who visit stores and restaurants to evaluate the service. There are plenty of legitimate mystery shopper jobs, but make sure you research the company before you begin. This scam starts with the work at home company sending a large check to cover shopping costs and payment for work done. But in fact, the check is a fraud, leaving workers in the red if they engage in the work. Be suspicious of any work from home opportunity that requires you to provide your bank account number or make transfers between your account and the companys. If It Sounds Too Good to Be True When it comes to work from home jobs, be cautious about potential employers that are overly enthusiastic about the ease of work and the plentiful earnings opportunities. That sounds cynical, but the truth is that if it sounds too good to be true - e.g., earning a dollar for stuffing an envelope - then the opportunity is probably is a scam. Before you agree to work from home, make sure you do your due diligence, and research the company. It will be time well spent to save you possibly risking your online credibility, as well as your financial security. Work at Home Job Search Tips There are plenty of work at home jobs that you can begin with no fees. In fact, you can get started in the great majority of them with just your laptop, a good netz connection, and your own set of skills and ambition. There are lots of freelance jobs that you can work from home, and some that may require just occasional work in the office. With the technology we have available, there are work from home opportunities in almost every industry, and at every level from entry to executive. Finding your ideal position may take some time and patience, but you will likely be surprised at the opportunities available, and the companies hiring in the work from home market. Some of the best places to look for work at home jobs are the same as where you would find a traditional position. Job boards and company career pages will list work from home or remote positions alongside traditional jobs, and the application process will likely be similar. Companies who hire a lot of remote workers have procedures in place for interviewing by telephone or video, so their hiring managers can meet prospective employees in any location. How to Avoid Job Scams Information about job scams including how to check out job listings, how to avoid employment scams, how to report a scam, and where to find lists of scams.

8 ways smart people act stupid

8 ways smart people act stupid8 ways smart people act stupidIts good to be smart. After all, mit niveau people earn mora money, accumulate mora wealth, and even live longer. On the surface, being smart looks like easy living. But theres another side to the story.Intelligent people have a reputation for making dumb mistakes, especially in situations that require common sense. The simplicity of unterstellung situations and the abundant intelligence of those who tend to muck them up can be downright comical.Common sense is not so common. - VoltaireAfter decades of research, scientists are finally beginning to understand why this happens. Shane Frederick at Yale University welches among the first to conduct research that explained why rational thinking and intelligence dont tend to go hand in hand.In his studies, Frederick gave people simple problems to solve, like this one A bat and ball cost a dollar and 10cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?F rederick found that some people have the tendency to confidently blurt out the wrong answer, stating that the ball costs 10cents. You, of course, knew that the correct answer is that the ball costs five cents, and youre completely justified if youre wondering if the, well, less-than-smart people were the ones blurting out the wrong answer.Psychologists from James Madison University and the University of Toronto wondered the same thing. They gave similar tests of logic to hundreds of people and compared the accuracy of their answers to their levels of intelligence. The researchers found that smart people weremorelikely to blurt out the wrong answer because they actually make more mental mistakes when problem-solving.Smart people are more prone to silly mistakes because of blind spots in how they use logic. These blind spots exist because smart people tend to be overconfident in their reasoning abilities. That is, theyre so used to being right and having quick answers that they dont e ven realize when theyre blowing it by answering without thinking things through. The dummies getting the bat-and-ball question wrong werent so dumb, either. When Frederick gave the question to students from Harvard, Princeton, and M.I.T., more than half of them got it wrong. Even students from some of the most prestigious universities in the world make stupid mistakes.Perhaps the scariest thing about the errors that highly intelligent people make is how unaware they are of them. People of all levels of intelligence succumb to whats called the bias blind spot. That is, were great at spotting other peoples mistakes and terrible at recognizing our own. The sillier the mistake, the harder it is for an intelligent person to accept that theyve made it.I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing. - SocratesWhile it might seem like we dont spend our days solving logic problems like the bat-and-ball question, the brain functions involved in solving these problems are the same ones we use in everyday thinking. Hence, the tendency to do stupid things follows smart people into the workplace. Consider some of the most common ways in which smart people manage to shoot themselves in the foot.1. Smart people are overconfidentA lifetime of praise and pats on the back leads smart people to develop an unflappable faith in their intelligence and abilities. When you rack up accomplishments while people stroke your ego, its easy to expect that things will always go your way. But this is a dangerous expectation.Smart people often fail to recognize when they need help, and when they do recognize it, they tend to believe that no one else is capable of providing it.2. They push people too hardSmart people develop overachieving personalities because things come so easily to them. They simply dont understand how hard some people have to work to accomplish the same things, and because of that, they push people too hard.Smart people platzset the bar too high, and when people take too long or dont get things quite right, they assume its due to a lack of effort. So they push even harder and miss the opportunity to help others achieve the goals theyre so anxious for them to reach.3. They always need to be rightIts hard for anyone to graciously accept the fact that theyre wrong. Its even harder for smart people because they grow so used to being right all the time that it becomes a part of their identity. For smart people, being wrong can feel like a personal attack, and being right, a necessity.4. They lack emotional intelligenceWhile intelligence (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ) dont occur together in any meaningful way (Smart people, on average, have just as much EQ as everyone else), when a smart person lacks EQ, its painfully obvious. These high-IQ, low-EQ individuals see the world as a meritocracy. Achievements are all that matter, and people and emotions just get in the way.Thats a shame becauseTalentSmartresearch with more than a million p eople shows that- even among the upper echelons of IQ- the top performers are those with the highest EQs.5. They give up when they failHave you ever watched a sporting event and seen the stunned look on the face of an athlete whom everyone expected to win, but didnt? Smart people can easily fall into the trap of seeing failure as the end of the world because frequent success creates expectations that make failure hard to tolerate.People who have to work hard for what they achieve have plenty of practice learning how to deal with failure. They learn to embrace it because they know that failure is just a stepping stone to success.6. They fail to develop gritWhen things come really easy to you, its easy to see hard work as a negative (a sign that you dont have what it takes). When smart people cant complete something without a tremendous amount of effort, they tend to feel frustrated and embarrassed. This leads them to make the false assumption that if they cant do something easily, th eres something wrong with them.As a result, smart people tend to move on to something else that affirms their sense of worth before theyve put in the time to develop the grit they need to succeed at the highest possible level.7. They multitaskSmart people think really quickly, which can make them impatient. They like to get several things going at once so that there isnt any downtime. They think so quickly that, when they multitask, it feels like its working and theyre getting more done, but Stanford research shows that this isnt the case. Not only does multitasking make you less productive, but people who multitask often because they think theyre good at it are actuallyworseat multitasking than people who prefer to do one thing at a time.8. They have a hard time accepting feedbackSmart people tend to undervalue the opinions of others, which means they have trouble believing that anyone is qualified to give them useful feedback. Not only does this tendency hinder their growth and per formance, it can lead to toxic relationships, both personally and professionally.Bringing it all togetherTo some, this post will read like Im trashing smart people, but Im not. Create a Daily Plan to Work More Efficiently

Create a Daily Plan to Work More EfficientlyCreate a Daily Plan to Work More EfficientlyThe first and most important step to take towards working mora efficiently is to have a daily plan in place. It is important that your plan is written down somewhere On a calendar, notlageepad, or stored on your computer. Do not simply go through a mental checklist each day. Having a written plan is a must to keep nagging thoughts out of the back of your head and to help prevent disasters because you forget about something important. Most people will find that they need to veer from a daily plan from time to time, but having one will help you organize your time better, prepare for specific projects in advance, and a plan will give you a clearer mental picture about all the things you have to do. Getting Rid of Daily Distractions With a Plan If you arrive at work each day and are immediately overwhelmed with your long to do list and desk clutter, at best, you will bolt into your day like a race horse (and quickly burn out after a sprint, just like a racehorse) focusing on whatever seems most pressing at any given time. Worst case is you will sit in a funk not knowing where to start. Either way, simply putting out fires each day is the least efficient way to attack your workload and the best way to exhaust yourself while only getting further behind. Without a plan, the days distractions will quickly take over the phone rings, you start to answer emails, co-workers start chit-chat, and before you know it, lunchtime has arrived and you have little accomplished. Your daily plan might include an hour each morning to get settled in by returning calls, checking email before you get started on other tasks but it will do mora than serve as a guideline about what to do with your time. For example, if you purposely set aside an hour to do something and you go over that time limit, you will know that you need to adjust your plan for the next day. By mapping out your day in segments or by tasks you can more easily identify problems areas and your peak efficiency times (i.e., you may be less efficient after lunch if you suffer from afternoon slump or youmay be a slow starter in the morning). Avoid Taking on More Than You Can Handle An optimist is someone who can see the positive in a given situation will generally focus on the belief that all things are possible. There is nothing wrong with being an optimist unless it leads you to underestimate your abilities, the time it will take to accomplish something, and results in your taking on more than you can handle. A realist can be an optimist, but a realist also sees the logistics that may be involved in dealing with a situation and will factor in potential obstacles and restraints. If you do not have your game plan lined up for the day, you may have a harder time saying no to helping others or taking on additional projects because you have a positive can do attitude that overrides reality or common sense. It is easy to underestimate how long things will take to accomplish your tasks much less someone elses if you think you are superwoman and a sunny outlook is all it takes to get things done. Knowing what is on your plate for the day, and having already determined a budget for your own time for specific tasks can help you meet deadlines, get more done each day, and be more realistic about taking on additional work. Creating Your Attack Plan Before you head off to work, decide ahead of time what you will focus on when you get there. Better still, plan your day the night before and prepare your desk for the tasks you want to accomplish in the morning. For example, get files or reading material organized for the morning so you can jump right in, or put items you need to type or phone calls to return in the order you need to get them done. Having a plan can help you create predictable routines that will, in turn, keep you better prepared to face chaotic days when your boss or a high mainte nance client demands more of your time.

Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employ ees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with to tal spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive vorkaufsrecht for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

New Industry Speaker Program to Launch at the ASME Congress in Montreal

New Industry Speaker Program to Launch at the ASME Congress in Montreal New Industry Speaker Program to Launch at the ASME Congress in Montreal New Industry Speaker Program to Launch at the ASME Congress in MontrealThis years ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and ausgesetztsein in Montreal, Canada, will include a new addition to its program of special events - the Invited Industry Presentations. The three new sessions, which will take place Nov. 18-20, will feature executives from three Montreal-area industry powerhouses Rolls-Royce, Pratt Whitney, and Bombardier. The 2014 Congress will be held from Nov 14-20 at the Palais des Congres convention center in downtown Montreal. This new speaker program was spearheaded by George Kardomateas, PhD, the technical chair for the 2014 Congress, who sees the initiative as a way to encourage more engineers from industry to attend and participate in the conference. Giving Congress this other component - an industry speakers prog ram - was something I knew I wanted to do when I took over as technical chair, said Dr. Kardomateas, professor of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Noting that much of the Congress program is academic in nature, he said, One thing I want to do is to increase industry representation and participation. It will be very beneficial for everyone attending the Congress. They will get the state-of-the-art in the mechanical engineering field from distinguished, technical leaders in industry. And it is my hope that ansicht presentations will in turn attract even more industry participation at the Congress. Brian NolanBrian Nolan, chief engineer of engine development programs at Rolls-Royce Energy, will give the first of the three presentations on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 100 p.m. to 145 p.m. During his talk, Extension of the Natural Gas Envelope on Rolls-Royce Industrial Engines and Development of the Industrial Trent Dry Low Emissions (DLE), Nolan, who is responsib le for the gas generator scope of new products at Rolls-Royce Energy, will discuss the latest developments of the industrial Trent Dry Low Emissions gas turbine, and highlight the technical challenges and solutions during the product maturity program. Make Your Employee Referral Program a Strong Hiring Tool

Make Your Employee Referral Program a Strong Hiring ToolMake Your Employee Referral Program a Strong Hiring ToolEmployee referrals were formerly considered a somewhat risky practice - an invitation to nepotism and favoritism. But, in reality, having a strong employee referral program can be a very reliable recruiting tool for businesses. Why? Because most employees would rather walk across a bed of hot coals than recommend a friend or relative who is a bad fit for a role. The evidence suggests, too, that the turnover rate among employees recommended by other staff is typically low.How to create an employee referral program Given the evidence of lower turnover rates among recruits found through employee referrals, and the added benefit of increased staff engagement, its no surprise that more companies today have instituted employee referral programs. Most effective employee referral programs include rewards (e.g., extra vacation days, trips, cash bonuses) for employees who recommend s omeone whom you eventually hire, and who stays with the company for a specific period. Before you launch an employee referral program, make sure you consider the ramifications and establish a systematic process for administering it. Some questions to consider includeWhat incentives are you going to offer for employee referrals, and are you going to vary the incentives based on the importance of the job?How long does a referred employee need to remain with your company before the person who made the referral becomes eligible for the incentive? (The norm at most companies is between three and six months.)What procedure must an employee referral follow? Not finding the right job candidates? We can helpREQUEST TALENTAre you absatzwirtschaft your company as the best place to work?To attract the best and brightest, youll need to convince potential recruits that yours is a great company to work for. Here are some tips to represent your firm as professionally as possibleWhen the time comes to choose the person or people who meet with referred candidates on your companys behalf, forget about seniority and look instead for individuals who have good people skills and consistently generate positive energy.Pay attention to the impression your company website sends and the experience applicants have when they call your company for information or show up for interviews.Make it clear to everyone in your business who may interact with a candidate how important it is to be warm and courteous. At a time when a candidate can spread news of his or her poor experience at your company like wildfire via social media, your reputation can be affected overnight. The last thing you need when youre searching for top talent is a bad reputation.Publicizing your employee referral process After you set up an employee referral program, dont keep it a secret. Publicize it in every way you can - through posters, email, employee newsletters and the company intranet. Keep in mind that your objective is to generate as many quality employee referrals as possible. Remind employees about the program and make sure everyone knows when someone receives a bonus for an employee referral.

Why success is a lousy teacher

Why success is a lousy teacher Why success is a lousy teacher Earlier this week, I finished the final draft of my forthcoming book. It’s a huge milestone, and I’ve been delighted with the feedback I’ve received from my agent, publisher, and trusted early readers (one said, “F*cking incredible! Thank you for creating a masterpiece to help the world grow. No matter what the ‘outcome’ is with this book, it changed the way I choose to approach the world”).Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Although I’m happy with the early feedback, I’m also taking the time to pause, reflect, and think through the mistakes I made along the way.I’ve learned the hard way that success is the wolf in sheep’s clothing. It boosts egos and drives a wedge between appearance and reality. When we succeed, we believe everything went according to plan. When we’re popping champagne corks to celebrate successes, we avoid a reckoning. When we think we’re destined for greatness, we start blaming others if things don’t go as planned. Success makes us think we have the Midas touch- that we can walk around turning everything into gold.As Bill Gates says, success is “a lousy teacher” because it “seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.” “Whom the Gods wish to destroy,” wrote Cyril Connolly, “they first call promising.” The moment we think we’ve made it is the moment we stop learning and growing. But it’s possible for bad decisions to lead to good outcomes. You can win a poorly played poker hand if luck intervenes. A badly shot soccer ball can end up in the goal if it ricochets off another player. A bad trial strategy can produce a win when the facts and the law are on your side. The early readers that enjoyed my book are seeing only the final product. They’re not seeing the ghastly first drafts, the pages and pages of material I cut out because I was too embarrassed to even look at them (let alo ne print them), and the numerous bad decisions I made along the way. Here’s one example: I had about 12 months to finish the book, and I spent 5 of those months on the first chapter I wrote (leaving only 7 months to finish the remaining 10 chapters!). My perfectionism kicked in, sending me down a rabbit hole as I attempted to read everything that was conceivably related to the chapter- including the entire  Routledge Companion to Thought Experiments, a 600-page tome that was largely an excruciating read and ultimately produced  zero  usable material for the book. This made for a less-than-pleasant 7 months as I scrambled to finish the remaining 10 chapters by my deadline. This was a major time management failure- one that I won’t be repeating for my next book. Here’s another example of learning from mistakes after a success, from the National Football League (NFL) draft. For my non-American readers, the NFL draft is an annual spectacle where football teams pick new players for t he upcoming season. Each team gets to select one player in each of the seven rounds. In the sixth round of the 2000 draft, the New England Patriots picked up a player who would go on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Tom Brady would win five Super Bowls with the Patriots and pick up four Super Bowl MVP awards- the most of any player in NFL history. Brady would be dubbed the “biggest steal” in the 2000 draft, and the Patriots leadership would be praised for its brilliant strategic maneuvering in scooping up a player of Brady’s caliber at the tail end of the draft. That’s one interpretation of the events.Another interpretation is far less forgiving of the Patriots leadership. The Patriots had their eye on Brady for a long time, but they waited until the end of the draft to pick him up (he was the 199th pick of 254 total players- almost as bad as getting picked last in gym class). In an alternate universe, the same process could have generated a very differen t outcome. Another team could have drafted Brady before the Patriots. Brady may not have realized his full potential if injuries hadn’t crippled the Patriots’ starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe, moving Brady into the starting line-up. In this alternate universe- which was inches from the actual one- the Patriots management would have been branded buffoons, not visionaries. The Patriots management had gotten lucky with Brady. Instead of patting themselves on the back about their “biggest steal,” they treated the Brady incident as a scouting failure and focused on fixing their intelligence mistakes. So the next time you’re tempted to start basking in the glory of your success while admiring the scoreboard, stop and pause for a moment. Ask yourself, What went  wrong  with this success? What role did luck, opportunity, and privilege play? What can I learn from it? If we don’t ask these questions, we’ll keep upping the ante, but our luck will eventually run its course.Just bec ause you’re on a hot streak doesn’t mean you’ll beat the house.[The story of Tom Brady is based on  Ryan Holiday, Ego is the Enemy].Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.  Click here  to download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook: 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Why we should get rid of generational labels in the workplace

Why we should get rid of generational labels in the workplace Why we should get rid of generational labels in the workplace Many people seem determined to group all millennials into a single box, which seems a little unimaginative at best, considering demographers can’t even unilaterally agree on what exactly constitutes a millennial.Whatever you call this group, there’s no denying the fact that millennials have a tremendous effect on the way we all work - but then again, so do the generations that came before and after. The real challenge is to find meaningful lessons beyond descriptors based on age. Here’s why generational labels can cause problems in the workplace and how we should think about age at work instead.Labels are open for misinterpretation“People have long lumped members of generations together,” said Phyllis Weiss Haserot, president of Practice Development Counsel, who specializes in intergenerational work relationships. “It makes for good media stories with a lot of misinterpretations and misunderstanding.” A fascinating article on NPR on the naming of generations  credits hi storian William Strauss and his co-author the late Neil Howe for naming and referencing the group starting with those who graduated high school in 2000 in their books The History of America’s Future, 1584 to 2069 and Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation.“One problem  with this (in addition to the fact that everyone is an individual) is that the older and younger halves of each generation are different from each other because of different formative economic, political, social and cultural influences,” Haserot said. This means you might have micro-groups within groups. Some younger Boomers even created their own name, “Generation Jones” (a reference to the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses”), Haserot said. They are self-fulfilling“If you assume millennials have no work ethic, you won’t give them meaningful responsibilities and hence you’ll never be impressed by any one individual, thus confirming the label,” said  Wes Higbee, President, Full City Tech Co .How can we go beyond  labels on a daily basis? Higbee said he evaluates his own biases.“I might assume that millennials don’t take notes and don’t listen well in meetings, and so I spend half an hour typing up notes after every meeting,” he said. “Maybe the reality is I have a few lackadaisical employees, and I can work with them to be more responsible - or just get rid of them - instead of labeling all young people as lazy and wasting hours every week typing up notes.”  They ignore individual differences  Tim Elmore, president of Growing Leaders, a nonprofit global leadership training and development organization, refers to those born since 1990 as “Generation iY” and describes them as having a plugged-in lifestyle and wanting immediate gratification.  He said that the generations who came before can help teach them how to build  â€œa healthy sense of interdependence- not a narcissistic independence or needy co-dependence.”“Help them to develop personal value s,” he said. “They must see themselves as individuals who possess a set of values, but who collaborate with other generations.”That may include helping them to make and keep short-term commitments, working with them to simplify their lives beyond the pursuit of perfection, and enabling them to set realistic goals.“You will find they often possess lofty dreams, and they need help turning them into bite-size objectives with deadlines,” he said. “Don’t rain on their parade- just help them take realistic steps, one at a time, toward their target. Encourage them to set short-term goals that are achievable and keep momentum toward the long-term goal.” They isolate employeesHelene Cruz, Director of Career Counseling at Pace University Career Services, said she is  proud that her team is multi-generational.“We have established a culture that cultivates learning from one another across seven generations,” she said. “We appreciate our millennial colleagues and rely on th e fact that they are technically-savvy and creative, ready to bring new ideas to the table and not afraid to embark on new initiatives.” All employees, no matter their age, contribute to the organization, Cruz said.  â€œWe glean a tremendous amount of insight from our millennial teammates because they are closer in age to the students and can more fully express the student perspective/experience,” she said.  â€œIn turn, because employer representatives are also our clients, many Baby Boomers and Gen X staff have previously worked in various industries, have hired employees, and therefore can speak to the needs of the employers, which we share with our millennial teammates.”    The focus should not be on how generations differ, but on how they can work together, Cruz said.“Establish environments where they interact with multiple generations,” she said.  â€œHighlight the strengths of people at different ages in life, and how each person adds value. Find or create situations where different generations can interact meaningfully.”

The Star Spangled Banner KSA Accomplishment Revisited

The Star Spangled Banner KSA Accomplishment Revisited The Star Spangled Banner KSA Accomplishment Revisited The Star Spangled Banner KSA Accomplishment Revisited In keeping with our annual Independence Day tradition, we are celebrating the Fourth of July by bringing back our favorite blog about the Star Spangled Banner. On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key was on a ship eight miles down the Patapsco River (near the Key Bridge today). He had been sitting out there watching the bombardment of the British on Ft. McHenry all day and through the night. By early morning, he looked out and the huge flag was still waving in the breeze after twenty-five hours of heavy bombardment by the British. Key, who sometimes wrote religious poetry, was inspired to pen the poem (in the graphic below) that became the National Anthem in 1931. The Commander of Ft. McHenry, Colonel Armistead knew how important Ft. McHenry was to our nation in 1812. The British had just burned Washington (including the White House and the Capitol Building) and were advancing toward Baltimore. The Commander felt that the Baltimoreans were discouraged and afraid for their city. He felt that they would have their spirits raised by seeing a huge, high flying flag at Fort McHenry as a symbol of defiance. The Defence of Fort McHenry, poem by Francis Scott Key, published in the Patriot on September 20, 1814. Colonel Armistead commissioned Mary Youngs Pickersgill, a local seamstress and flag maker to make two flags for Fort McHenry in 1813 a large flag and a smaller one to fly in bad weather. She was paid $500 for both flags, the large one being 30 x 42 feet, so it could be seen from a great distance. She was asked to sew a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes, the number of states then in the Union. (My grandmother was a seamstress and flag maker with a famous flag maker in Baltimore City from 1910 until 1940. I wonder if this is the same flagmaker?) The 15-star, 15-stripe flag was authorized by the Flag Act of January 13, 1794, adding 2 stripes and 2 Stars. The regulation went into effect on May 1, 1795. This flag was the only U.S. Flag to have more than 13 stripes. It was immortalized by Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Sept 13, 1814. The image above is representative of the actual flag that flew over Fort McHenry on that day and which is now preserved in the Smithsonian Museum. You can notice the tilt in some of the stars just as in the original Star Spangled Banner. Personally, I am inspired by Francis Scott Keys experience, the flag, Ft. McHenry, our countrys survival, and the amazing poem that Mr. Key wrote, especially the phrase oer the land of the free, and the home of the brave. Can your spirits be raised to write a better resume by thinking about the morning that Francis Scott Key wrote the poem Defence of Ft. McHenry that became the National Anthem? Mr. Keys accomplishment would make a great KSA for Ability to Write! Francis Scott Keys KSA Accomplishment,  Sept. 14, 1814 Position: Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Congress KSA: Ability to Communicate in Writing AUTHORED THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER The actual banner that flew over Fort McHenry Context:   As an attorney and aide-de-camp to General Smith, stationed near Upper Marlboro, MD, I found out my dear friend and elderly, Dr. Beane, who was captured by the British Army during a party at his home in Upper Marlboro. I was on a British vessel flagged for truce by the future President Jackson, on my way to pick up a captured friend in Marlborough. We got as far as the mouth of the Patuxent and then we were not permitted to return lest an intended attack on Baltimore by the British should be disclosed. We were brought up the Bay just across from Fort McHenry and there we were compelled to witness the bombardment of Fort McHenry, which the Admiral had boasted that he would carry in a few hours, and that the city must fall. Challenge:   We watched the flag at the Fort through the whole day with more than 500 bombs from British ships to Ft. McHenry. In the night the smaller weather flag was flying while we watched the Bomb shells in darkness not knowing that the American Military had secretly planned 4 barges, which the British did not detect. These barges attached the British militia and sent them running, some with tugs assisting. At the early dawn our eyes were surprising greeted by the proudly the 15-star flag of our country (late to be known as the Star Spangled Banner). Actions:   By morning, I was compelled to pen a poem that reflected my thoughts of the war and particularly of the flag, “Oh say can you see by the dawn’s early light … “ was my first thought. I wrote four verses that reflected topics about the day before and my vision of the flag in the morning. The first verse reviews the dawn’s light and the flag with broad stripes and bright stars that was still flying in the morning; the second verse reviews the dread silence and how the flag was fitfully blowing; the third verse reviews the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion; and the final and fourth verse celebrates the victory and peace that preserved our nation. Results:   I witnessed the last enemy fire to fall on Fort McHenry and in this memory, I wrote the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry has been renamed to “The Star-Spangled Banner” and has become a well-known American patriotic song. The poem and song were recognized for official Navy use in 1931 and became the national them by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 and signed by President Herbert Hoover. +++++++++ This KSA was written by Kathryn Troutman, Author, Ten Steps to a Federal Job, 3rd Edition. Retain New Employees by Tapping their Job Skills

Retain New Employees by Tapping their Job Skills Retain New Employees by Tapping their Job Skills Retain New Employees by Tapping their Job Skills By Roberta Matuson Congratulations! Youve recruited a great new hire. Having just successfully gone through the hiring process, you can attest to the fact that its not such an easy thing to do these days. Heres how to ensure your recruitingeffort pays off for years to come as you retain new employees. Evaluate the job skills of your new hire Everyone puts their best foot forward during the recruitment process, which means its not uncommon for a bit of job skill inflation to occur, particularly as candidates fast approach the finishing line. Assessing the job skills of a new hirewill enable you to assign the proper level of work. Be sure to assign appropriate work to help ensure that your new employee is neither overwhelmed nor bored in their new job. This one move will get you off to a great start with your new hire. Tap into the potential of your new hire As more and moreMillennials and Gen Z workers enter the workforce, the days of seniority-based opportunities become a thing of the past. If employees do not feel challenged, especially Millennial talent, they are likely to move on to a fresh opportunity. Its important to manage your new talent early on. If they can handle the additional workload, continue to introduce new assignments that tap their skills. Be sure to regularly check in to maintain a reasonable balance of assignments and expectations. Develop the job skills of your new hire Both career development and job skill development rank high on the list of what todays Millennial employees want from their employers. These workers want to see career progression within an organization. The continuous mastering of job skills is needed to move up the career ladder in any business. Enable your new hires to grasp the job skills required for future career growth. Be willing to provide access to training and coaching, so they can obtain the job skills necessary for promotion. Helping your new hires to develop their job skills is a win-win situation. Theyll be able to take on more responsibility, which in turn will free you up to handle matters that require your expertise. Doing so will also make your recruitment process easier, encouraging Millennials to consider your company in their job search, as you increase employee retention. Look within before hiring from the outside Leaders often make assumptions about their workers that in many cases turn out to be a misconception. For example, consider how the skills of an administrative assistant can be applied to a different role in the organization. Avoid overlooking a well-qualified internal candidate with the right job skills for a new role in the organization. One way to tap the skills of your current workforce is to take inventory of their job skills. This process can be as simple as creating an Excel spreadsheet and asking your employees to list their job skills along with their proficiency. Alternately, some payroll services or human resource information systems can track your employees job skills, with modules specifically built for tracking job skill development. Be sure your departments are properly staffed Youve spent a lot of time and energy recruiting your new hire. The last thing you want to do is lose them because they are doing the work of two or more people. If indeed an area has more work than the staff can handle, consider bringing in temporary staffing until such time as you can fully staff the rest of your department. Alternately, you can also shift work to another department until your recruitment process catches up with the demand you have for additional staff. Consider outsourcing some of the work while recruiting additional new hires. Be a great role model One of the best ways to encourage the new hire that youve recently recruited, or any hire for that matter, is to be a great role model. Share some of the many ways you are continuing to build your own job skills. For example, invite your new hire to join you at an association meeting that will be a job skill builder for both you and your employee. Let employees know about online courses that will improve their soft skills or technical expertise. As your staffs skills grow, so too will employee retention, employee satisfaction and worker productivity. Your reputation as a great employer will also grow, which will make your ability to recruit a new hire the next time around, that much easier.

4 Tips to Help Control Freaks Be Team Players - The Muse

4 Tips to Help Control Freaks Be Team Players - The Muse 4 Tips to Help Control Freaks Be Team Players Remember back when you were in school, and your teacher would announce that a new group project was being assigned? If your classrooms were anything like mine, you recall hearing a collective groan echo from chalkboard to chalkboard. Confession time: I was probably the one groaning and complaining the loudest. But, it was likely for a different reason than most of my classmates. My peers were disheartened to hear that even more work was being tossed on their plates. Me? I wasn’t so upset about the new assignment. Rather, I was more discouraged that I was going to have to work in a group, when I’d honestly rather just do the entire thing myself. That probably makes me sound like a pretty terrible person, and an even worse colleague- I get that. But, it doesn’t change the facts: I’m a total control freak. I feel this undeniable urge to have the final say on every last detail- no matter how small. There’s only one problem: This approach simply isn’t maintainable (or advisable, really) in a work environment. When you need to effectively collaborate and communicate with your co-workers, behaving like this really gets in the way. As much as I love being in charge, I don’t want to become known as that teammate who’s a total steamroller. So, needless to say, throughout my years I’ve managed to identify a few strategies that’ve allowed me to loosen the reins and transform myself into a little more of a team player. Give these four tips a try, and you’re sure to improve the way you work with your co-workers (even if your inner control freak is screaming all the while). 1. Recognize Your Weaknesses If you’re thinking that this seems like an incredibly discouraging first point, I can’t blame you. However, taking some time to identify those things that you aren’t so great at can be incredibly helpful in relaxing your grip on every last piece of a project. When you crave control, it’s your nature to want to handle everything- regardless of whether or not you’re the best one for the job. As bad as it sounds, you’d rather have it within your own grasp than have to trust someone else to get it done. This is why recognizing your weaknesses can be so effective: You’ll have a much easier time delegating or releasing those things that you already know aren’t your forte. There’s no greater sense of comfort than knowing that spreadsheet is in the hands of your office’s resident Excel whiz or that the pickiest proofreader in your entire company is taking the final look through that report. Identifying your own weaknesses does something equally important at the same time: It highlights your team’s strengths. By figuring out those pieces you aren’t well-equipped to handle yourself, you’ll find natural openings where others can easily step in, fill those gaps, and contribute to the project (without you spiraling into a panic). 2. Be Open and Honest There’s nothing worse than a control freak who repeatedly chants, “I’m not a control freak!” Listen, you like to be in charge- and, sometimes there’s nothing wrong with that. But, refusing to own up to your true colors won’t do you any favors. In fact, it will likely just irritate your team even more. The best thing you can do? Own up to the fact that you like to take charge right from the get-go. Doing so will boot that big, pink elephant out of the room right away, and nip those hushed whispers and annoyed remarks from your co-workers in the bud. However, simply admitting that you can be on the pushier side isn’t quite enough. Take this piece of advice one step further by enlisting an accountability partner on your team. You should explicitly instruct this person to give you a heads up and pull you back down to earth when you’re crossing the line from organized to obsessive. Having him or her keep you in check when you start to get a little too demanding will save you from snowballing into a full-on dictator. 3. Discuss, Don’t Demand If you asked two different people to make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I’m willing to bet they both wouldn’t go about it the same way. Maybe one would slather peanut butter on one slice of bread, and then jelly directly on top of it. Perhaps the other would coat one slice in peanut butter, the other in jelly, and then smoosh them together. This isn’t a lecture on the art of sandwich making (and- let’s face it- it is an art), but the point is this: Even though those people had two very different ways of making their classic PBJ, they still ended up with the same sandwich. There’s more than one way to do anything. That doesn’t necessarily mean that one method is right and the other is wrong- they’re simply different. And, unfortunately, that ideology is much too easy to lose sight of when you’re gritting your teeth at the thought of not maintaining every ounce of control by doing things your way. So, before storming in with your “my way or the highway” approach, make sure that you zip your lips and take some time to listen. You should even ask questions, rather than doling out strict demands and instructions. You might be surprised by the thoughtful ideas and suggestions that come to the surface. No, this might not come easily when you’re a natural-born control freak. But, as the old adage goes, we have two ears and one mouth for a reason. 4. Find Helpful Ways to Control Alright, just because you can’t clear everybody else out of the way and charge full steam ahead on your own doesn’t mean you can’t be responsible for anything. You are definitely still entitled to contribute to the project or objective with your thoughts and your efforts. Nobody’s saying that being a team player means being completely hands off. The key here is to channel your “my way or the highway” tendencies into things that your team will actually appreciate. Perhaps that’s by creating a detailed timeline for the entire project. Or, maybe you’re the best one to lead your regular team meetings to get status updates. There’s a big difference between keeping everybody on track and keeping everybody under your thumb- and there are definitely times you can grab the reins and provide direction, without coming off as unbearably bossy. Find some different things that would actually help your team and put those on your own plate. You’ll be a valuable team member, while still satisfying that inner control freak. I’ll be the first to admit that I love being in charge, and that can often make it difficult for me to be perceived as a true team player. Luckily, these four tips have helped me to squelch my control freak tendencies (at least a little bit) and be an all-around better collaborator. Give them a try for yourself- I’m sure your teammates will appreciate it! Photo of co-workers courtesy of Portra Images/Getty Images.

5 ways for parents to empower their daughters

5 ways for parents to empower their daughters 5 ways for parents to empower their daughters While opportunities for women have advanced significantly in recent decades, studies reflect that the path to personal independence and growth isn’t always smooth -   starting in early childhood up through high school.Gender stereotypes persist. According to a survey of 1,900 girls and young women between 7 and 21, conducted by the charity Girlguiding, many feel that pressure from social media, TV, friends, teachers, and parents affects how they think and act. Another study in the  Journal of Adolescent Health  reported that stereotypes of girls were reinforced by schools, parents and the media, thereby limiting their mobility and access to opportunities. One possible answer is for parents to empower their daughters from a young age.  We parents need to take the necessary time from our busy lives to find out what our daughters are experiencing on a daily basis. We must break down barriers to success early on. Otherwise, girls frequently surrender their ‘surplus’ qualities before they even leave grade school, because they feel they won’t be accepted if they are “too much.” They are not allowed too many gifts for fear of alienating boys and competing with other girls. This has to stop.Sheri Engler, the author/illustrator of The Pearls of Wisdom: A Fairy Tale Guide to Life’s Magic Secrets for All Ages  offers  five ways parents can empower their daughters and help them grow into strong, successful women are:Explain the social dynamicHelp them understand the reasons why boys may be intimidated by powerful girls, and why girls may become jealous and pull down a girl who has too much.Help them avoid social programmingMost forms of mass media bombard girls with destructive messages. With character development so important, parents need to offer more positive influences. Discouraging Facebook is a good place to start “due to its entrainment of a ‘me-oriented’ society.”Provide social alternativesConnecting with other parents and families who hold si milar values is one option. Parents need to find out what’s really going on with their daughters, both at home and at school. Perhaps consider online or homeschooling if your child is being affected by negative conditioning from peers and/or misguided authority figures. Sadly, damaging messages come from every direction.Teach them to help othersParents can role-model strengthening values. These values could be exemplified by going together to volunteer in soup kitchens, to foster homeless animals, or to visit lonely, old people in nursing homes. Learning compassion for others supports strong self-esteem through character building.Help them identify their unique desires and abilitiesEncourage pride in being who they are on an authentic level. Help them experience life’s many aspects so they may explore their natural abilities and interests, while paying particular attention to what truly brings them joy - because that is usually where their authentic selves reside. We need to pre vent damage early on instead of trying to fix it after it’s too late.
