Should You List Experience Thats Not Relevant on Your Resume In the past, many people stayed in one career, whether it was their dream job or not,  throughout their working lives. However, this is not the case anymore. Nowadays, with more widely accessible  education and career opportunities, it is not uncommon for people to change jobs  and even careers every few years. Many of these career changers are concerned that  listing dissimilar work experience on their resume can hurt their potential job prospects. Is this the case though? There are two camps of thought on this: Less is more: Some career experts believe that less is more, and this rule applies to the information you choose to put on your resume. They think that it is important to keep your resume simple and clear, and the more irrelevant information you put on your resume, the more it dilutes your key  message. They believe that prospective employers are not interested in skills and  achievements that are not applicable to the position they are hiring. For example, if you  are applying for a job in sales, telling your prospective employer that you have helped  develop a database to track supplies is nice, but irrelevant. More is more: The other camp of career experts has opposite opinion when it comes to listing irrelevant  experience on your resume. These career experts believe that certain experiences may  seem irrelevant to the job you are applying for, but they are still important and should be  included on your resume. These experiences may demonstrate to your prospective  employers that you possess valuable skills, such as good problem solving and  communication skills that will benefit you in any career. Despite the difference between your previous jobs and the current  position you are applying for, these qualities are universal. If you can demonstrate these  all-encompassing skills, you will definitely impress your prospective employer,  regardless of what your past experience is. In addition, these career experts think that it is  better to include some non-work related experiences, such as volunteer work and even  hobbies, than having extended gaps in your resume. Get the best of both camps: Since many of your previous jobs have required different skills, it is a good idea to group  the most relevant skills in a subsection titled “Relevant Experience” on your resume. You  can put this subsection at the top of your resume and use it to highlight skills and  achievements that are most applicable to the position you are applying for. By putting  this subsection at the top of your resume, you can rest assure that it will catch your  prospective employer’s attention.  You are then free to list any further experience you would like to include further down your resume without it taking the attention off of your most relevant experience for that particular role. Want to Have a Second Act Career 3 Big Tips - Career Pivot Career Tips for Your Second Act Have you thought of doing something different in your “second act?” I have made six career changes, and three of those were after I passed the forty years barrier. I’ve made just about every mistake possible. My goal is to give you some tips as you prepare for your second act career. Let’s get started. Tip #1 â€" Know Thyself Most of us who have worked for 20 to 30 years have remade ourselves into the image of the employee that companies desire. For example, I am a closet introvert. I was a very shy kid. However, I was trained to present and be social during my 22-year tenure at IBM. I became really good at it. I even convinced myself that I am an extrovert. However, when I pursued a dream jobâ€"teaching high school math at an inner-city high schoolâ€"being on stage all of the time was one of the factors that wore me out and caused me to quit after two years. I did not know who I really was and what I needed in a job. Before you choose a second act, reflect back on your career and when you were the happiest. Who was your best boss and why was he/she your favorite? What was the makeup of your favorite team to work with? When did you feel valued at work? What made you feel this way? When did you have the right level of activity? This is much more important than you think! How do you deal with rules and who creates those rules? (I do not like rules! Schools generally want teachers who are very compliant.) How do you like to be treated on a one-on-one basis? Do you like people to be direct with you? How do you recharge yourself? Are you energized by being around people or by yourself? When I went to teach high school, most of my needs were not met. I was exhausted at the end of my first year. Tip #2 â€" Talents and Skills Can you tell someone about your natural talents? Notice I said natural talents and not skills. In the marketplace, we are paid for our skills. We develop skills because our employers want us to use specific skills. Can you differentiate between your talents and skills? Burnout usually comes from overusing a skill that is not tied to a natural talent. Have you ever thought to yourself, “I just do not want to do this job anymore.” I bet you were overusing a skill not tied to a natural talent. Think about it. When I told people that I wanted to leave a high-paying tech training position to teach high school, I heard the following responses: Listen to the most recent episode Why would you want to leave? You are so good at it. Why would you want to leave? You are paid so well. I just didn’t want to do it anymore! What skills do you want to carry forward into your second act career? What skills do you want to leave behind? Tip #3 â€" Be Prepared In Case You Fail This concept is very foreign to most of us who grew up with the space program. The mantra offailure is not an optionwas beat into us. What I am telling you is that failure ISan option, as long as you fail fast, learn from your mistakes, and have a Plan B. In my post Recovering from My 3 Biggest Career Mistakes, I wrote that I did best when I failed fast (six months), learned multiple lessons about myself and what I needed in the workplace, and had a Plan B already in place. The world is changing too fast for you to be successful every time. You must mitigate risk both financially and emotionally. It is alright to fail! Wow…ain’t that a new concept?! Silicon Valley has embraced the mantra Fail Fast, Fail Often, Fail Everywhere.So can you. Take stock of who you are, what skills you want to continue to use, and be prepared to fail. Networking or Serendipity - Jane Jackson Career Some people believe Serendipity is luck, or chance or accidental. I don’t. When it happens, it is meant to happen at that moment, right where you are. However, there are times when Networking that you can create your own Serendipity … or at least create a likely situation where it may occur!  Let’s be strategic about this. Now, I’m talking about creating Serendipity when it comes to your job search or the promotion of your business (in the case of the job search, your business is YOU!)  Attend an event, conference, social gathering or other networking opportunity with an expectation. Expect that SOMETHING GREAT is going to happen.  You are going to meet someone who is going to make a difference in your life. Golden rules:  1. Have Fun. Focus on letting yourself have fun, free from agendas, creating a positive impression on everyone you will meet.  2. Focus on meeting great people. Tell yourself that you are going to have a great time and will meet interesting people.  3. S tay Positive. Armed with a positive attitude, open for all good things to come, ensure that you are prepared with what is necessary to create the serendipitous moment … business cards, marketing material (if appropriate.) It’s all well and good to expect great things to happen â€" just ensure you have the required follow up!  4. Be observant. Keep your focus on what is going on around you â€" who is attending an event, what is actually happening, all this will give you clues as to whom you may wish to approach to ask a question or strike up a conversation. Be open to being approached too.  5. Evaluate your surroundings. If you’re attending an event, conference or social networking event, ask yourself the following questions:  Where will I be the most visible? Where are people most likely to engage with me? Who can I meet that is likely to tell his or her friends about me? Who looks like someone I’d like to have a conversation with?  6. Just BE THERE! Don’t plan too muc h show up and be prepared to let new people and situations unfold by themselves. If you are relaxed, others will relax with you too.  7. Extend every encounter. When talking with someone new and there is a mutual respect developing, ask if they would like to continue the conversation over lunch or coffee. Be interested. The longer you spend with someone, the more likely you are to discover how you can help each other. There may be other events you could attend together.  8. Make your memory happy. After you meet someone, WRITE DOWN (either on their business card or elsewhere) some memory joggers such as what he or she looked like, what you talked about, some personal info you can bring up next time you talk, your common point of interest.  9. Follow up. Follow up with a phone call or an email within the week. Use the information gathered from the previous example in your second approach. Prove your listening skills. Then, deliver something valuable like a link, recommendation or article.10. Maintain your network. Weeks, months and years may go by however, keeping in touch with the odd phone call, catch up coffee or even simply an email will maintain the relationship and who knows where the journey may take you.  Sometimes it will happen and you won’t even realise that it was serendipity, other times you will realise that you helped serendipity along a little bit.  Develop a positive attitude of expectation, prepare yourself mentally and when you turn up with a smile, that serendipitous moment (new people, new opportunities) will come to you. You’ve probably heard advice like this, and more when it comes to finding and achieving your dream career. If you want to find fulfilling work, you have to love what you do, right? You have to passionate about it, right? You need to be blissed out 24/7 on it, right? If you’re reading this article, this is probably something you’re super nervous about.
